Once incorporated as the City of Sawtelle, the land was later annexed by the City of Los Angeles; this area was the center of Westside Los Angles, which includes Purdue and the Civic Center at Santa Monica. ~ Westside Los Angeles Education ~ Westside Los Angeles is served by the Los Angeles Unified School District; there are 8 different local districts numbered 1-8 with 456 elementary schools, 86 middle schools and 92 high schools. The district is the biggest public school system in the state; ranking second in the US. The district serves over 720,000 students and employees over 75,000 people. After the County government, the district is Los Angeles County's second largest employer. The Los Angeles Unified School District serves all of Los Angeles and other cities that adjoin Southern California. The district has its own police department, which was created in 1948. The school cafeterias serve around 500,000 meals each day. The West Los Angeles Baptist School and St. Sebastian School are local private schools. ~ Business and Transportation ~ Several major recreational and cultural attractions, retail and educational facilities of the Greater Los Angeles Metro area sit within Westside Los Angeles, along with a great deal of the entertainment industry. A large business hub of the Westside is Century City, it contains entertainment law firms, talent agencies, and several major production companies. Developments close to LAX, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica are part of the entertainment industry. The proposed Laurel Canyon, Beverly Hills and Pacific Coast freeways have gradually sped the traffic flow process, but because of community opposition it was put aside. There are current proposals for widening the freeways and extend Red Line; these have been temporarily stalled and Olympic and Pico have been turned into one-way streets. ~ Thing to see and do in Westside Los Angeles ~ Westside Los Angeles is a vibrant community where life thrives between a dream and reality.
